Fire sprinklers on a well: how the tank and pump work

Why the well cannot do it alone
A well pump delivers a few gallons a minute for a household. A sprinkler system needs far more, all at once, for a set number of minutes. So the design separates the two. The well fills a storage tank at its own pace. When a head opens, a dedicated pump pulls from the tank and delivers the flow and pressure the calculation requires.
How the pieces get sized
- Demand. The two most demanding heads in the house set the flow and pressure.
- Duration. The standard sets how long the supply has to last, and that times the flow sets the tank.
- Pump. Sized to deliver the demand from the tank through the pipe run.
- Power. A plan for the grid going down, which the fire authority reviews.

Where the tank goes

Questions people ask
Can a well feed sprinklers directly?
Almost never. A well pump is sized for household flow, not sprinkler demand. The system runs from a storage tank that the well fills slowly, with a separate pump sized by the calculation.
How big is the tank?
The hydraulic calculation decides it from the two most demanding heads and the required duration. It is not a guess and it varies house to house. The installer runs it and the plan checker reviews it.
What about a power outage?
The design has to answer that and the fire authority will ask. Options include a generator circuit or a pressurized tank arrangement. Ask the installer which they propose and why.
What does the tank and pump add?
